Great news for Austria’s lynxes

Illegal lynx shootings in Austria have been all over the media in 2016. Recently, we’ve been waiting for the supreme court’s decision on whether or not compensation payments shall be made to the Kalkalpen national park, which is in charge of the Austrian lynx reintroduction project. Finally, there is the result: The supreme court has confirmed the payment of € 12,100! The money is not going to bring back the killed lynx, however it’s a strong signal that lynxes matter, that species conservation matters!
For more on this, check out the national park’s website.

And that’s not all. There’s some interesting developments within the hunting community. The illegal shootings have been a trigger to tighten the Upper Austrian hunting law. In the future, sentenced perpetrators will lose their hunting permit for up to seven years. Apart from this, the Upper Austrian hunting community also discusses the implementation of internal disciplinary proceedings.

What Skadi – the famous Upper Austrian lynx, we’ve recently photographed – thinks of all of that? We hope she likes these developments.

By the way, here’s a fresh, never published picture of her from one of our photo-traps. This time, however, she prefered not to look into the camera, she must have been to busy 😉 Anyway, we like it nevertheless, and think it’s worthwhile to share with you!
